    Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships for 2024 are now open for applications. This prestigious scholarship program, supported by Ghent University’s “Special Research Fund” (BOF), offers a unique “sandwich” PhD opportunity.

    It’s designed for exceptional PhD students from developing countries who are keen to split their research time between Ghent University in Belgium (‘North’) and a university in their home country (‘South’). This scheme is an excellent opportunity for those looking to expand their research experience across continents.

    Scholarship Overview

    The scholarship focuses on a “sandwich” model:

    • Duration: The scholarship covers a 24-month period at Ghent University.
    • The bench fee: Ghent University promoter receives €310 per month for research in Ghent and an €8,000 travel budget.

    Eligibility Criteria

    To be eligible for the Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships, candidates must:

    • Be a national of one of the selected developing countries. See the country list here.
    • Jointly submit proposals with a supervisor at Ghent University and a supervisor at the partner university in the South.
    • Research fields are open, with a preference for development-relevant topics.
    • Be a degree student aiming for a (joint) PhD at Ghent University. Exchange students are not eligible.
    • Be at the early stages of their Ph.D., with a minimum of 36 months of research remaining at the start of the fellowship.

    Note: Ghent University encourages female researchers to apply. A Ghent University supervisor can support a maximum of two candidates per call, provided they are of different genders.

    Application Process

    The application process involves several steps:

    • Submission: Applications must be submitted electronically in English to BOFapplication@ugent.be.
    • Supporting Documents: The Ghent University supervisor must also submit advice on the candidate and advice on the ethical and biosafety context of the proposed research project.
