The Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) 2027–2028 is a fully funded professional fellowship hosted by Columbia University for experienced human rights advocates working with non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The program equips participants with advanced knowledge, practical skills, and global networks to strengthen their work in promoting and protecting human rights.

About the Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP)
The Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) brings together experienced human rights defenders from around the world for intensive training at Columbia University.
The program is designed for professionals actively working on human rights issues through NGOs and civil society organizations. Participants engage in academic coursework, networking opportunities, and professional development while collaborating with Columbia faculty and fellow advocates.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be an active human rights advocate working with a non-governmental organization (NGO).
- Have significant experience working on human rights issues.
- Be fluent in English.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing human rights.
- Obtain institutional endorsement from their employing organization.
- Commit to returning to their organization after completing the program.
The following applicants are not eligible:
- Full-time students.
- Academics.
- Government officials.
- Applicants from high-income countries, except those representing marginalized communities.
Preference is given to applicants who have had limited opportunities to study or travel internationally.
A bachelor’s degree is preferred but is not required.
Program Conditions
Participants are expected to:
- Complete all program requirements at Columbia University.
- Participate actively in academic and professional development activities.
- Return to their home organization after completing the fellowship.
- Continue contributing to human rights advocacy within their communities.

- Obtain two signed letters of recommendation.
- Secure an institutional support letter from your supervisor.
- Upload your university diploma and/or academic transcript (if applicable).
- Include a donor support letter if your organization receives external funding.
- Submit the complete application before 15 October 2026.
