About the Commonwealth Fellowship Programme

The Commonwealth Fellowship Programme supports professionals and academics from eligible Commonwealth countries by providing opportunities for professional development, academic collaboration, research, and knowledge exchange in the United Kingdom.

The programme consists of two fellowship streams:

• Commonwealth Professional Fellowships – for mid-career professionals to undertake professional development at a UK host organization relevant to their field.
• Commonwealth Academic Fellowships – for university academic staff with a PhD to undertake academic skills development, research collaboration, and networking at a UK university.

The programme aims to strengthen professional expertise, encourage international collaboration, and enable fellows to contribute to sustainable development in their home countries after completing the fellowship.

Fellowship Benefits

Successful applicants may receive:

• Monthly living allowance of £2,218, or £2,753 for placements in the London metropolitan area
• Approved return airfare between the home country and the United Kingdom
• Reimbursement of the standard UK visa application fee
• Arrival allowance of up to £1,247.09, including support for warm clothing
• Conference and professional travel funding of up to:
  • £1,000 for fellowships lasting six weeks to two months
  • £2,000 for fellowships lasting more than two months up to three months
• Disability support where applicable
• Opportunities for research collaboration, networking, and professional development

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

• Be a citizen, refugee, or British Protected Person from an eligible Commonwealth country.
• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
• Not have indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom.
• Be employed and expected to return to their current organization after the fellowship.
• Be available to begin the fellowship on the prescribed start date.
• Not have undertaken a Commonwealth Fellowship within the previous five years.

For Professional Fellowships:

• Have at least five years of relevant full-time (or equivalent part-time) professional experience.
• Note that voluntary work does not count toward the required experience.

For Academic Fellowships:

• Hold a PhD.
• Be employed by a university in an eligible Commonwealth country.
