Is This the End of the Ongoing Strike?

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) asked the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) leadership on Saturday to resume negotiations with the Federal Government.

This was stated in a statement signed by the president of the association, Danielson Akpan.

NANS was responding to a statement allegedly released by ASUU in which it warned not to accept any further invitations to meet with the Federal Government.

“After a holistic critique of the lingering industrial actions embarked upon by the academic staff of our tertiary institution, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a Two Weeks Ultimatum to both the FG and ASUU to call off the lingering strike or face the full wrath of angry Nigerian students,” the statement reads.

The president also expressed disappointment that the Academic Staff Union of Universities vehemently opposed having student representatives present during the negotiation meeting, preferring instead to meet behind closed doors with the Federal Ministry of Education and the Union’s leaders.

He threatened a nationwide demonstration and the mobilising of 100,000 students for a rally in Abuja.

“They must be prepared to repay monetary compensations to Nigerian students from their salaries, which continue to count even when they are not working, to our detriment,” he continued.

“We are determined to carry out these actions to the fullest extent possible if our campuses are not reopened by the deadline.” “As a result, we urge the FG and ASUU not to put our resolve to the test because Nigerian students have been patient and (have been) taken for granted for far too long,” Mr Akpan added.

According to the union leader, the strike has had an impact on students’ academics, the rising cost of housing and may disenfranchise students from participating in the 2019 general elections.
