
As a member of the Smelter Bay Aggregates (Lafarge) team, the docking operator’s primary objective is to help support the team by stockpiling material shipped to the dock via haul trucks and cleanup.
Their daily tasks could include stockpiling, loading trucks, operating the shipping loader, loading vessels, and labour-intensive cleanup. The Docks Operator will have several duties that will fluctuate based on the needs of the business and to uphold the day-to-day operations at the Smelter Bay Dock.
The position will also require the loading of lake freighters, which will include extended hours and weekends.
Responsibilities
Safety
- Must adhere to all local, provincial, OSHA, and environmental regulations as outlined in the Employee Safe Work Guidelines booklet and any/all rules or information provided by the company.
Stockpiling
- Ensure the dock operations are running safely. Stockpile hauled material and prevent cross-contamination.
Cleanup
- Sustain good housekeeping practices while performing cleanup-related tasks at the dock site with equipment, brooms, and shovels to ensure the dockside is clean from any material.
Shipping
- Load highway trucks with the correct amount and type of material as per the driver or weighmaster. Run the ship loader control tower for vessel loading.
Production
- Operation of portable stacker to handle aggregate material to ensure sufficient stockpile space for upcoming vessels.
Equipment
- Ensure assigned equipment is operated and maintained to original equipment manufacturer specifications and industry best practices.
Maintenance
- Provide general maintenance duties on equipment and conveyor systems.
Other
- Perform other duties as assigned to assist in the efficient operation of the site.
- This position is for the day shift (Approximately 7:00 am to 5:00 pm) Monday through Friday, with flexibility based on occasional weeknights and weekends as required for the vessel loading schedule.
Qualification Profile
Education & Work Experience
- Canadian secondary school diploma or equivalent
- Heavy equipment operation experience as an asset
Knowledge & Skills
- Specific mobile equipment training, including wheel loader training, is an asset
- Mechanical aptitude
- Time and self-management skills as part of a team or independently
- Physically fit to encompass labor requirements of the role
- Physical Requirements
- Sitting, standing, walking for extended periods of time
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle
- It may require considerable physical activity, and must be capable of heavy lifting, bending, and twisting.
- Climbing stockpiles, stairs, and inclines on conveyors.
