    MCC is the relief, development, and peace agency of the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches in North America. MCCS staff reflect MCC’s mission, beliefs, and values in the workplace and interactions with individuals, agencies, and businesses in the broader community. 

    This role requires eight weeks of 0.8 FTE (32 hours/week) between July 02nd and August 31st, 2024.

    The MCC Thrift Shop movement was started 50 years ago in Altona, Manitoba. MCCS Thrift Shops seeks to be a friendly, caring presence in their community, showing value and respect to all.

    The thrift shops’ mission statement also includes practicing and promoting faithful stewardship, caring for God’s creation, and raising funds for MCC.

    The Shop Assistant is accountable to the Manager, who will provide direction for the shop assistant’s tasks, duties, and responsibilities. This is a part-time, term position ending August 31st, 2023.

    Daily work hours are typically 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m., including various monthly Saturdays, with the Manager determining the final schedule. 

    Key Responsibilities

    • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting MCC’s values of peacemaking, respect for all, and unconditional love through daily interactions with volunteers, donors, and customers.
    • Follow the MCCS Thrift Shop Mission Statement and the wishes and directives of the Shop Board under the guidance of the Manager.
    • Communicate the MCC mission and values and the mission of the Thrift Shop positively to donors, volunteers, and customers.
    • Demonstrate a positive attitude, integrity, and honesty.
    • Demonstrate enthusiasm about working with various people, both volunteers and customers, and acknowledge the “customer comes first” approach.
    • Communicate clearly and accurately to ensure effective store operations.
    • Adapt to feedback and opportunities for improvement.
    • Develop and display knowledge of all products and MCC’s mission statement.
    • Assist with social media campaigns, where possible, and at the direction of management.

    Pop-up Event Duties

    • In collaboration with the Manager, plan for 2-3 pop-up events throughout the summer.
    • Coordinate the collection of merchandise for the pop-up events in collaboration with other Shop staff and volunteers.
    • Oversee all aspects of the pop-up events, including (but not limited to) pricing, merchandising, and item sales, ensuring best sales practices are implemented.
    • Connect with interested hosting venues and ensure hosting agreements are in place.

    • Salary Details: Base salary: $17. Paid hourly, with vacation pay paid out

    Location Description

    Saskatchewan has approximately 1 million people, 35% of whom live in rural areas. The majority are second—to fifth-generation Canadians of European descent; 15% are of First Nations origin, and 5% are Metis. About 700 people arrive in the province each year as refugees.

    The MCC constituency includes 96 churches, most belonging to Mennonite Church Saskatchewan and the SK Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches.  Rosthern Junior College, a Mennonite high school, is also a part of the constituency.
