    British Ecological Society Grants for African Ecologist

    The British Ecological Society has set up a grant fund and is now open for applications. This grant support is particularly for Africans to carry out novel research in ecology.

    The BES grant is designed to help African ecologists to develop their skills, knowledge base, and experience while building their network with other ecologists from parts of the world.

    Eligibility Criteria for the British Ecological Society Grant

    Applicant should:

    • Be a scientist and a citizen of an African country.
    • Posses an MSc or equivalent degree.
    • Work for a university or research institution in Africa that has basic research facilities.
    • Carry out the proposed research study on an African country or its associated islands.

    Benefits of the British Ecological Society Grant

    • The maximum value of the grant is £8,000 for research.
    • A subsequent sum of up to £2,000 may be requested to sponsor travels to help develop a network with other ecologists. This has to be requested at the time of application.
    • Travel funds to meet and work with ecologists in the Global North to gain experience.
    • Accepted applicants will receive two years of BES membership and free online access to the society’s journals.

    How to Apply for the British Ecological Society Grant

    Interested and qualified individuals can apply for the BES grant through this link.

    The deadline for the first round of funding is March 19th, 2025.

    Note that:

    • Applicants can submit one grant application per round across all grant schemes.
    • The application will be reviewed by a panel based on personal qualifications, novelty and feasibility of the research proposal, scientific excellence, and the academic and non-academic impact of the research study.
    • Applicants must demonstrate that they have a network of ecologists in the Global North who can provide advice for the duration of the research study. If international travel is part of the application, proof of close links to these ecologists must be provided
    • All areas of ecological studies are covered under this grant funding except research focused solely on forestry, agriculture, and bioprospecting.
    • The planned research study could be part of an ongoing study. However, the application should be for a clearly defined research portion.
