The European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme that combines study and research across European, African and Asian partner institutions. Students begin their studies in Germany, continue in Norway, undertake a research-based internship, and complete a Master’s thesis.

Selected Erasmus Mundus scholarship recipients receive a monthly allowance of €1,400 for up to 24 months, along with coverage of university registration, student service fees and health insurance.

About the Erasmus Mundus EMMIR Scholarship

The European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations is a two-year, 120 ECTS multidisciplinary Master’s programme focused on migration and intercultural relations.

The programme combines perspectives from Europe, Africa and Asia and provides students with theoretical and practical training in migration studies. It also gives students opportunities to conduct fieldwork in African, Asian and European contexts.

The programme is structured across four semesters:

  • First semester: Germany
  • Second semester: Norway
  • Third semester: Research-based internship
  • Fourth semester: Master’s thesis

EMMIR is delivered through a consortium of African, European and Asian partner institutions, together with a wider network of associated partners.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent first degree in a field related to migration studies, such as social sciences, history, cultural studies, education, law, economics, development studies or journalism.
  • Have a final degree grade equivalent to at least a C+ or the required equivalent in the applicant’s grading system.
  • Provide evidence of the completed degree and final grade by the application deadline. A transcript confirming completion of all required examinations may be accepted.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of migration studies, intercultural relations and empirical research methods.
  • Normally, the most recently obtained degree should not be more than five years old. Applicants with older degrees should explain in their statement of purpose why they are returning to university.
  • Applicants who already hold a Master’s degree must provide a strong justification for pursuing another Master’s degree.
  • Applicants who have previously received an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarship are not eligible to receive another Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English or whose undergraduate education was not conducted in English must demonstrate English proficiency.

Accepted evidence may include:

  • Proof that previous higher education was completed in English
  • Proof of professional work conducted in an English-speaking environment
  • An accepted English language proficiency test

Therefore, IELTS may not be mandatory in every case if another accepted form of English proficiency evidence is provided.

Benefits of the Erasmus Mundus EMMIR Scholarship 2027

Successful Erasmus Mundus scholarship recipients will receive:

  • €1,400 per month for 24 months
  • Health insurance coverage

  • Student service fee coverage
  • Fully funded Master’s study under the Erasmus Mundus scholarship scheme

The monthly scholarship is intended to support students during the programme. Scholarship recipients are expected to use their stipend to meet mobility-related costs such as travel, visa expenses, vaccinations and residence permit fees required for the EMMIR mobility pathway.

There are no separate additional payments for travel or installation costs.
