Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) | Warning Strike Extended by Three Weeks

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended its warning strike by eight weeks, which is approximately two months.

    ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday announced that the initial one-month warning strike had been extended with two more months added.

This decision was taken to enable the federal government to have more time to address the union’s demand.

ASUU President Professor Emmanuel Osodeke made this announcement in Abuja after an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Union, who said the roll-over strike should commence on 14th March, 2025.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the union had initially embarked on a nationwide warning strike on Feb. 14th to drive home its demands to the federal government.

Their demands include funding of the Revitalization of Public Universities, Earned Academic Allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) and promotion arrears.

The union also recalled the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement and the inconsistency in the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

ASUU claimed that the government has been insincere hence the reason for their taking this decision seeing that several meeting with the government is futile and yielded no results.

According to NEC, ASUU’s response so far is that “the government is a continuation of the unconscionable, mindless, and nonchalant attitude of the Nigerian ruling elite towards the proven path of national development, which is education”.
