The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will hold an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) to address recent developments, particularly the federal government’s favorable response to its requests.
In preparation for the meeting at its headquarters in Abuja, the union has asked its zonal branches to collect members’ views via voting during the meetings scheduled for tomorrow in its various zones across the country.
The meeting’s outcome would result in the cessation of the strike by late Thursday or early Friday morning.
This occurred after a post on social media earlier on Tuesday said that the union has called off the nearly 8-month-long strike and urged members to resume academic activities on October 17.

While responding to an inquiry, ASUU president Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke disputed the story, saying the strike has yet to be suspended.
He did, however, indicate that the union was working toward suspending the strike and that the suspension would be contingent on members’ views at zonal meetings.
The latest action of the lecturers union came following the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
The Speaker had informed the ASUU president and other members on Monday that the strike would be suspended very soon, claiming his discussion with President Muhammadu Buhari about the union’s action had been beneficial.
Earlier, Femi Falana, SAN, a human rights lawyer and ASUU counsel, claimed the union would end its nearly eight-month strike soon.
