The Fisher Fellowship runs concurrently with the William Southam Journalism Fellowships at the University of Toronto from September to May.
All university resources are available to fellows, and they are free to audit any graduate or undergraduate courses as well as various academic programmes and recreational pursuits.
Fellows live in Massey College, a multidisciplinary graduate residential college at the University of Toronto. A Fellowship has no academic prerequisites, and the work done over the academic year is not recognised with credits or degrees.
Each semester, at least two academic courses must be audited, and one academic course must be completed entirely with all homework turned in.
The Fisher/JHR Fellow meets with them frequently but does not offer journalistic classes.

Eligibility
To be eligible for Gordon N. Fisher/JHR Journalism Fellowship, applicants must have/be:
- Five years of media industry experience
- They work full-time at a newspaper, radio station, television station, magazine, or news service as a news or editorial employee. Independent journalists with a minimum of eight years of continuous media activity are also considered.
- Knowledge of English
- Three recommendation letters
- Intentional statement
- Proposal for a Study Plan
Incomplete applications with missing documents will be dismissed.

Applicants are shortlisted by JHR staff. The successful candidate is selected by a committee headed by the Master of Massey College, the Senior Southam Fellow and the Director of JHR.
The chosen candidate is chosen based on their level of expertise and ability to become an efficient and ethical journalist in the future. Journalists of both genders are welcome to apply. Successful individuals are curious, intelligent, and enthusiastic.
They may survive for several months in a chilly environment. They want to raise their profile abroad and are open to learning from a strange and foreign culture.
The Fellowship underwrites
- The selected applicant will receive an eight-month stipend that will cover both their salary and any program-related expenses.
- The first monthly instalment will start with a payment at the end of September and expire at the end of April.
- Every university fee
- Travel costs for the Fellow up to the price of an economy flight to and from TorontoTravel costs for scheduled excursions during the programme
- A budget for winter clothing
- A budget for books.
Please note that there are no provisions for family members.
