ASUU Sues Obaseki for Halting Union Activities in Edo-Owned Higher Institutions

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has dragged the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, to court for putting a halt to union activities in state-owned colleges and universities.

The Ambrose Alli University Chapter of ASUU recently filed a lawsuit against Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Edo State Government, and the state’s Attorney-General in response to the last week’s ban on union activities in all state-owned tertiary institutions.

Chairman and Assistant Secretary of ASUU, Dr Cyril Onogbosele and Dr William Odion, who are claimants, have petitioned the National Industrial Court sitting in Edo State.

Their petition is to determine whether the state government and other defendants in the case have the power under Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Section 35(3) of the Trade Unions Act, Cap. T14, Laws of Nigeria, to suspend or prohibit trade union activities in AAU.

Following a protest by AAU students over the ongoing nationwide strike by ASUU, the state administration stopped all union operations at all state-owned institutions of higher education.
