The Aga Khan Foundation annually provides scholarships to outstanding students from select developing countries for postgraduate studies.

The Scholarships are awarded on a 50:50 grant-loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July.

About Aga Khan Foundation Scholarship

The Aga Khan Foundation provides several postgraduate scholarships each year to deserving students from specific developing countries who have no other way to pay for their studies to foster effective scholars and leaders and prepare them for employment, primarily within the AKDN.

Once a year in June or July, after a competitive application process, scholarships are given out on a 50% grant:50% loan basis.

The Foundation gives requests for Master’s level courses top consideration. However, it will only consider applications for PhD programmes from exceptional students who have received strong recommendations from their teachers and who require a PhD to achieve their professional goals (whether academic or research-focused).

  • Pakistan
  • Syria
  • Tajikistan

  • Uganda

Applications from those who are natives of one of the aforementioned developing nations, are interested in studies relevant to development and have no other means of financing their education are accepted in France, Canada, the UK, Portugal, and the USA.

Selection Criteria and Eligibility

The major criteria for selecting award winners are:

  • Genuine financial need
  • Admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and
  • Excellent academic records,
  • Thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans.

Candidates are also assessed based on their extracurricular activities, the potential for success, and the likelihood of thriving in a foreign academic environment.

Applicants are expected to have some job experience in their desired sector.

Students under 30 years old are prioritised.

Loan Requirements: A 5% annual service charge and repayment of half of the scholarship’s value are required as loans.

A guarantor must co-sign the loan contract. Six months after the Aga Khan Foundation-funded study period ends, a five-year payback term begins.

How to Apply for Aga Khan Foundation Scholarship

  • In the applicant’s current country of residence, application forms are available through the Aga Khan Foundation or Aga Khan Education Board/Service office.
  • Applications should be returned in their entirety to the organisation from which they were obtained or to the address listed on the form’s front. They must not be transported to Geneva.

The deadline for applications is March 31, 2024. Internal deadlines maybe sooner in other nations.
