To promote excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctorate levels, the provincial government funds the Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) program.

To qualify for the scholarship, you must be an international student studying in Ontario with student study permission. The scholarship can only be held for a minimum of two consecutive terms.
Application Process
- A candidate must have earned a first-class grade in the previous two full-time academic years (minimum A-/80%).
- Regardless of whether a degree was earned, all post-secondary institutions attended must provide transcripts; graduate transcripts are necessary.
- An applicant for the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST), worth $15,000 per year, is likewise evaluated using the same scholarship application form.
- Students can take up the OGS or QEII-GSST award for at least two terms (receiving $10,000 total) or three (receiving $15,000 total). The awards are non-renewable.

Evaluation Criteria
Using the following three criteria, candidates are chosen for evaluation:
- Academic transcripts; a list of competitive scholarships, awards, and honours; and a weighted percentage of 30–50% assigned to academic excellence
- Research Ability and Potential in Program Study; As evidenced by publications, conferences, presentations, and originality, research ability and potential in program study will be weighted between 30 and 50 per cent.
- Communication and Leadership Ability; As evidenced by a list of pertinent volunteer, leadership, and academic work experience, communication and leadership ability, with a weight of 0–20%, are evaluated.
