About Shanghai Government Scholarship
The Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship was founded in 2006 with the goal of improving the growth of international student education in Shanghai and encouraging more exceptional foreign students and scholars to attend East China Normal University (ECNU).
The Shanghai Government Scholarship is available to outstanding overseas students applying to undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral programmes in Shanghai.
Applicants lacking a qualified HSK level for the undergraduate programme can apply for a one-year pre-college programme to learn Chinese with a full scholarship.
If the candidate cannot acquire the required HSK level after completing the pre-college programme, he or she will be graduated as a language student.

Eligibility for the Shanghai Government Scholarship
- Non-Chinese citizens in good health are required to apply.
- Pre-college applicants must have a high school diploma and be under the age of 23.
- Bachelor’s degree applicants must have a high school diploma and be under the age of 25.
- Master’s degree applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35.
- Doctoral degree applicants must have a master’s degree and be under the age of 40.
- Students who have received the Chinese Government Scholarship or any other scholarship from another organisation are not eligible to apply to SGS.
Application Process for the Shanghai Government Scholarship
- Applicants must apply directly to Shanghai’s Higher Educational Institutes once every academic year.
- Applicants who meet the qualifying standards may apply on an ongoing basis.
- Applications are accepted beginning in January. Applicants should check with the respective Higher Educational Institutes for individual application dates.
