About World Bank

The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Programme (RSMFP) of the World Bank pairs aspiring development economists from developing nations with World Bank research economists,

Providing the fellows with exceptional opportunities to participate in rigorous research relevant to policy at the World Bank’s Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC).

Fellows will be housed at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., for eight months (September to May each year),

Requirements for World Bank Fellowships Program Qualification

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the RSMFP:

  • Citizens of World Bank WBG member countries, with a bias for developing-country citizens;
  • MA graduates or those currently pursuing a PhD in Economics or a comparable subject;
  • No one under the age of 35 (by June 30th of the year the fellowship begins);
  • You must be willing to relocate to Washington, D.C., for the term of the fellowship.

The RSMFP reviews submitted applications using the following method to identify suitable candidates with the most innovative and relevant research projects in the development field.

  • Each eligible application is reviewed independently by two qualified reviewers who evaluate the following:
  • The suggested fellowship’s quality (70%)
  • Prospects for a fruitful post-PhD research career (30%)
  • All criteria are strictly followed during the selection process. There are no exceptions. During an open call for applications, eligibility requirements WILL NOT CHANGE. This information, however, is subject to change between the completion of one application procedure and the start of the next.
