AREF has announced the applications for the AREF Women in Research Essential Grant Writing Skills Programme 2025.

This initiative is to strengthen the female scientist’s health research capacity in Africa who are dealing with the major health challenges in the continent.
The fully online programme will be for over eight 3-hour sessions between September and November 2025 and is designed to produce tangible progress towards a grant proposal.
The Programme Will Cover the Following Topics
- Developing and expressing your unique research niche
- Formulating a compelling research question
- Understanding funders’ requirements
- Writing in plain English
- Planning your proposed project and budget
- Writing different sections of a proposal
- Key parts of a typical Case for Project Description/support
- Preparing for a Fellowship interview.
- Principles of collaborating and managing with a team
- Understanding and practising peer review

Cost
AREF participants do not have to access internet services or equipment as AREF does not provide funding.
AREF Women in Research Essential Grant Writing Skills Programme Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be a woman health scientist/researcher.
- Be an African country citizen.
- Hold a research doctorate (PhD/DPhil/MD), a clinical /medical qualification, and a relevant research Master’s degree.
- Be employed in Africa by a specialist research institution or a recognised university.
- Not have participated in grant writing training or equivalent proposal development.
- Be committed to conducting and developing health research.
- Not have an international research grants portfolio (combined value of £250,000 or more).
Program Format
The programme includes:
- Daily 3-hour online sessions from September 18-22, 2025 (09:30-12:30 GMT).
- Daily 3-hour online sessions from November 8-10, 2025 (09:30-12:30 GMT).
