The University of Edinburgh offers a one-year postgraduate scholarship to each student living in Tanzania to study a Masters-level programme in the Centre of African Studies.

About Julius Nyerere Masters Scholarship Programs

In 2009, the Julius Nyerere Scholarship was established in honour of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who oversaw Tanganyika’s declaration of independence in 1961 and later served as Tanzania’s first prime minister and president.

In 1949, Nyerere was awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Edinburgh, where he earned a Master of Arts degree after taking courses in moral philosophy, political economy, social anthropology, British history, economic history, and English.

Eligibility for Julius Nyerere Masters Scholarship

The grant will be given to a Tanzanian student who has been admitted full-time for the MSc in Africa and International Development.

The Julius Nyerere Masters Scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievement.

  • Candidates must have or intend to receive, the equivalent of a UK first class or 2.1 Honours degree in a Humanities or Social Science field at the undergraduate level.
  • Candidates must submit a Personal Statement for the scholarship application, outlining why they are applying for the award and their experience and goals in Africa and International Development.
  •  In addition, candidates must arrange for two referees to provide reference letters supporting their application.
  •  Please remember that the Nyerere Scholarship cannot be combined with any other scholarship award.

  • Candidates must have applied for admission to the University of Edinburgh to have access to the scholarship application system.
  •  Please remember that after applying for admission, it may take up to ten working days for all system checks to be completed and access is given.
  •  The online scholarship application form can be found in EUCLID and accessed through MyEd, the web-based information portal.
  •  You require your University User Name and password to access MyEd. If you need help, please visit here.
  •  Eligible applicants will complete an online scholarship application.
