The AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme 2025/2026 is now accepting applications.
The initiative seeks to equip bright young African scientists to compete successfully for the UKRI MRC and other significant funding opportunities in global health research.
African scientists will get funding from the MRC and the Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF), which will help them reach their full leadership and global health research potential.
The curriculum runs from October 2025 to October 2025 and consists of two residential workshops and one online session.
The curriculum is meant to support, involve, and improve participants’ talents, giving them the tools they need to compete for funding opportunities, form successful teams, work worldwide, influence stakeholders, and pursue fulfilling research careers.

Cost
The workshops’ costs, along with the nominees’ lodging and travel expenses, will be covered by MRC and AREF.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must be early career researchers leading their research group and inhabitants of an African nation who an accredited African university or research organization employs.
They must have experience securing research funding and either a research doctorate or a medical or clinical degree with a suitable master’s degree.
Selection Process
A compelling personal statement, a letter of support from a senior authorized representative of the employing institution, and evidence of the ability to help the candidate and their home institution are requirements for acceptance.
