What Is Twitch?
Twitch is a live streaming platform used mainly by gamers that debuted in 2011. Since then, it has grown in popularity, with 3.8 million unique broadcasters as of February 2020.
Twitch allows gamers — or anyone interested in lifestyle casting about other topics such as food or music — to stream their activity and have others watch in real-time. Streams can last from a minute to eight hours or more.
A stream can be found by browsing various categories, including specific games. If you find a streamer you enjoy, you can subscribe to their channel to receive activity updates and notifications.
How Does Twitch Work?
A split-screen display lets you see what the streamer sees on their monitor when you watch a live stream or “broadcast.” You will, however, be able to hear and see them play through a smaller window on the edge of their stream.
Users can buy games on Twitch through links in streams, and streamers can use affiliate links to sell games and other products related to their streams and earn sales commissions.
You can comment alongside other viewers while watching a Twitch stream, and depending on the channel, you may be able to make suggestions or ask questions and receive real-time answers.
Twitch also saves streams, allowing you to watch previously streamed gameplay or shows.
In order to provide users with the same content, from people to channels, along with a variety of mobile-friendly features, the company Twitch has also released iOS and Android apps.
How to Delete a Message On Twitch
With tens of thousands of viewers chatting on a single channel, spam, harassment, and inappropriate comments can quickly accumulate in the chat boxes on Twitch.
This is why moderators must keep things in order by deleting certain messages.
Until recently, there was no way to delete a single message from a channel on Twitch. You could instead ban a specific user from a channel or give them a ‘timeout,’ which would delete a string of their messages.
Moderators can now delete a single message, which is how to go about it.
Follow These Steps to Delete a Message on Twitch:
Go to your creator dashboard by clicking on your profile icon.
Now, click stream manager and then on the cog wheel next to the chat button at the bottom to access your chat settings.
Select “Show Mod Icons.”
Then, in the chat, click the trashcan icon next to the name of the person whose message you want to delete.
The message will be removed from the chat immediately.
I’ve included some screenshots below in case you need more assistance.
Go to your creator dashboard by clicking on your profile icon.
Now, click stream manager and then on the cog wheel next to the chat button at the bottom to access your chat settings.
Select “Show Mod Icons.”
Now, enter the chat and click the trashcan icon next to the name of the person whose message you want to delete.
The message will be removed from the chat immediately.
Although no one in the chat will be able to see the message, the streamer and mods can still view it by clicking the “click to show” button.
This is useful if you intend to report the user or if you want to show the streamer why you deleted a specific message as a mod.
It is worth noting that the ability to delete a single message in Twitch chat is only available through the Twitch platform.
Streaming tools such as Streamlabs and OBS do not support deleting individual messages. Not right now, at any rate.
Instead, on these platforms, you can time out the user behaving badly in chat. When a user times out, everything they have typed in the chat up to that point is deleted. We’ll walk you through it below.
How to Time a User Out on Twitch
To time out a user on Twitch, do the following:
The streamer or one of the mods will enter “/timeout [username] [duration] [reason]” into the Twitch chat. (without the quotes or brackets)
When the user presses enter, he or she will be timed out for a set amount of time.
You must enter the “/timeout” command followed by the username, although specifying a length and a reason is unnecessary.
If you do not specify a timer, the default timeout is 600 seconds.
You can also specify what time increments you want to use in the timeout. For example, if you wanted to prohibit someone for one minute, you could enter “1m” in the duration field, and they would be banned for one minute.
The durations can be seconds (the default value), minutes, hours, days, or weeks. You can time someone out for a week!
However, they would have had to be a truly horrible actor for you to time them out for a whole week.
You should also be aware that the maximum time you can time someone out on Twitch is two weeks (or 1,209,600 seconds.).
If you don’t want the individual in your channel after two weeks, simply ban them.
If you wish to timeout someone in time increments other than seconds, I’ve provided a handy table below.
Unit of Time | Letter to Type in Chat |
---|---|
Seconds | s |
Minutes | m |
Hours | h |
Days | d |
Weeks | w |
As previously stated, timing someone out will remove anything they have typed in the chat. As a result, if you only want to erase particular things a user has typed in chat but don’t want to timeout the user, you may simply time them out for one second “1s.”
This technically counts as a timeout, and their messages will be removed, but it won’t last long, and they can continue to participate in chat.
Another less popular technique to timeout a user in the chat is to click the clock icon next to their username.
Again, you must allow “Show Mod Icons” for the clock icon to appear, but clicking it will immediately time out a user for 600 seconds (10 minutes).
Most people prefer to type the command in chat and time people out that way because it offers them more control, but that is all up to you.
If you wish to remove a timeout you have imposed on a user before the timer expires, follow these steps in the conversation.
How to Remove a Timeout on Twitch
Use these steps to remove a timeout on a user on Twitch:
The streamer or one of the moderators will enter “/untimeout [username]” into the Twitch chat (without quotation marks or brackets).
After pressing enter, the user will be un-timed and able to chat again.
It’s important to understand that “untiming” a user or removing their timeout does not bring back any of their previous chat messages.
Everything a user has typed in chat up to that point is deleted once you have timed them out.
However, suppose that everyone in the chat is acting out, not just a select few. Can the entire Twitch chat be cleared?
How to Delete Twitch Chat
Follow these steps to clear the entire Twitch chat:
The streamer or moderator must enter the Twitch chat.
Enter “/clear” (without quotation marks) in the Twitch chat.
All messages in that stream’s chat will be deleted.
As you can see, this is a rather drastic option because you will be erasing everything in chat for that stream.
It’s a little aggressive, but if the chat has gotten out of hand, this might be the best way to regain control and reset your chat to 0.
So, now that we’ve discussed deleting other people’s bad messages, how about deleting your own messages in Twitch chat? Is that even a possibility?
Can You Delete Your Twitch Messages?
Twitch chat allows you to delete your messages, but doing so will only prevent them from appearing in your chat box.
Everyone in the Twitch chat, including the streamer, can still see the messages you sent and deleted.
This is how you would delete your messages in Twitch chat so you would no longer see them.
How to Delete Your Twitch Messages
Follow these steps to delete your Twitch message:
- Click on the cog wheel next to the chat button at the bottom of the chat box.
- Now, select “Clear My Chat.”
- Anything you or anyone else has typed in chat up to that point will be deleted from your chat box, but streamers and others in the chat can still see the deleted messages.
How to Ban Someone on Twitch
Follow these steps to ban someone on Twitch:
- A streamer or moderator must enter the Twitch chat.
- Enter “/ban” (no quotation marks) followed by the username, and press enter.
The user is now banned from your channel and will remain so until they are unbanned.
How to Unban Someone on Twitch
Follow these steps to unban someone on Twitch:
- A streamer or moderator must enter the Twitch chat.
- Enter “/unban” (no quotation marks) followed by the username and press enter.
The user has been unbanned from your channel.
