This is to inform the general public that the University Of Ibadan (UI) management has published the admission requirements for her department of Geology For her admission aspirants.
The admission requirements consist of O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.
Geology draws on a wider set of Ordinary Level subjects than most science courses here. Alongside the usual sciences the department accepts Geography, Further Mathematics, Economics or Technical Drawing.
The departmental mark is the demanding part. Geology asks for 250 in the school screening exercise, which is fifty points above the general university JAMB requirement of 200.
UI Department Of Geology Admission Requirements
O’level Subject Combinations
Candidates who wish to study Geology at the University Of Ibadan (UI) must possess Five ‘O’ level subjects at one sitting or 6 ‘O’ level subjects in 2 sittings, including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and one of the following: Geography, Further Mathematics, Economics, and Technical Drawing.
The five core subjects are English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The additional subject is drawn from Geography, Further Mathematics, Economics and Technical Drawing.
That optional list is unusually broad. A candidate with Technical Drawing or Economics rather than a fourth science can still satisfy this part of the requirement.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
English Language, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology / Mathematics.
Three of the four are fixed. The fourth paper is a choice between Biology and Mathematics, so a candidate may use whichever of the two is stronger.
UI JAMB Cut-Off Mark
Generally, For any candidate to be admitted into the University Of Ibadan (UI) for any course, the candidate must score 200 and above in JAMB. That is to say that the University Of Ibadan (UI) JAMB Cut-Off mark is 200.
UI Department Of Geology Departmental Cut-Off Mark
The UI Department of Geology’s Departmental Cut-Off Mark is 250. That is to say that, Candidates who seek admission to the University Of Ibadan (UI) Department of Geology must score 250 and above in the school UTME Screening exercise.
The two numbers belong to two different examinations. The JAMB score decides admission to the university, and the screening score is what Geology uses when selecting candidates.
Where UI Geology Sets Its 250 Mark
The subject requirement here is broader than it first appears, since the sixth place can be filled from four quite different subjects rather than from the sciences alone.
The screening mark is where the course becomes competitive. At 250 it sits well above the university figure, so a candidate planning only to clear 200 is underestimating the course.
The Ordinary Level wording allows five subjects at one sitting but then names five core subjects plus one further subject, which totals six. Confirm the exact position with the current JAMB brochure or with the Department of Geology before applying.
