    In an effort to position Canada as a global hub of excellence in research and higher education, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) was established.

    Graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, the natural sciences and engineering, and health are supported by VCS for students who exhibit both leadership qualities and high academic success.

    Canadian and international PhD candidates studying at Canadian universities qualify for the three-year, $50,000-per-year award.

    When selecting candidates to recommend for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) programme, nominating institutions are asked to consider diversity in the fields they propose, as well as in the official language spoken and citizenship of the candidates.

    Canada’s three federal funding agencies administer the Vanier’s scholarships:

    • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
    • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
    • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

    Eligibility

    Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international students enrolled in qualified Canadian universities and pursuing a PhD.

    To be considered for a Vanier CGS, the candidate must:

    • Possess a Vanier CGS quota and be nominated by just one Canadian university.
    • You should be enrolled in your first doctoral programme (including a combination of undergraduate/graduate research programmes like MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD, assuming they have a clear and substantial research component).
    • Intend to undertake full-time doctorate (or dual graduate programme, such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD) studies and research at the nominated institution during the summer semester or the academic year following the release of the results.
    • Not having finished a doctoral programme that lasted longer than 20 months.
    • Have completed the previous two years of full-time study with a first-class average—or the equivalent—as decided by your school. Candidates are urged to contact the school to learn what constitutes a first-class GPA and other requirements.
    • They cannot pursue or complete a doctoral degree if they now possess or formerly held a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.

    Eligibility of Degree Programs

    Only degree programmes with a major research component are eligible for doctoral awards.

    The research component must be a programme requirement and is defined as significant, independent research that results in a dissertation, significant scholarly publication, performance, recital, or exhibit that has been merit reviewed at the institutional level.

    Clinically focused programmes of study, such as clinical psychology, are also good programmes if they include a sizable amount of the research mentioned above.

    Selection Criteria

    • Transcripts, prizes, distinctions, and previous grades show academic proficiency.
    • Research potential, as shown by the candidate’s track record in the field, his or her enthusiasm for learning, the planned study’s ability to expand scientific understanding, it’s potential to benefit Canadians, and any anticipated results.

    How to Apply for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship 

    Candidates must have their desired university submit a nomination on their behalf. Direct applications to the Vanier CGS programme are not accepted.
