WAEC Further Mathematics Past Questions and Answers | Study Guide

Further Mathematics is taken by a much smaller group of candidates, usually those heading for engineering, the physical sciences or economics. The paper assumes you are already comfortable with core Mathematics, and past questions are the clearest way to find out whether you really are.

This page explains how to use them well and where the official materials come from.

Secure core Mathematics first

Almost every Further Mathematics question rests on techniques from the core paper. Candidates who struggle with surds, indices or basic manipulation will struggle here regardless of how much extra material they cover.

Our WAEC CBT practice test covers core Mathematics free of charge. Further Mathematics is not among the 15 subjects in the practice set, but tightening the core is the most useful preparation you can do for it.

The areas that carry the paper

Matrices and determinants, binomial expansion, calculus, vectors, coordinate geometry, statistics and probability, and mechanics together account for most of the marks. The spread is wide, so steady coverage beats intensive work on one topic.

Know which questions to attempt

The theory paper usually offers a choice, and picking well is a skill in itself. Read every option before starting, and choose on the basis of which topics you can finish rather than which look shortest on the page.

Method marks are everything

  • Set out each stage of your working clearly, even when the algebra gets long.
  • State the rule or theorem you are applying before you apply it.
  • Attempt every part. In a demanding paper, partial credit adds up quickly.

Older papers still count

As with core Mathematics, the question style here shifts very slowly, so papers from well beyond the usual five-year window remain good practice. Check anything unfamiliar against the current syllabus before investing time in it.

Official syllabus and materials

WAEC owns the copyright to its question papers. The current Further Mathematics syllabus is published by the West African Examinations Council at waecnigeria.org, and approved texts are sold through accredited bookshops.

Find your weakest topic

Work one question from each of the main areas listed above and note which defeated you fastest. That single exercise will direct your revision far better than working through a textbook front to back.
