WAEC Home Management Past Questions and Answers | Study Guide

Home Management is widely assumed to be an easy pass, and that assumption is where most candidates lose marks. The paper expects precise terminology and structured answers, not general common sense about running a household.

This page explains how to revise with past questions and where to find the official syllabus.

What the syllabus actually covers

The subject spans family living and resource management, food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, housing and home care, consumer education, and child development. Past papers show the balance between these areas clearly, which helps you plan revision.

Use the right terms

Examiners look for the vocabulary of the subject. Writing about managing money earns less than writing about budgeting, fixed and variable expenses, and resource allocation, even when the underlying point is identical.

When reviewing a past question, note the terms used in the question itself and reuse them in your answer. They are a strong signal of what the mark scheme expects.

Answer the number asked

  • If a question asks for four functions, give exactly four, each explained in a sentence.
  • Separate points clearly rather than running them into one paragraph.
  • Use Nigerian examples where a question invites them.

The practical component

Practical work is assessed too, covering areas such as food preparation and simple garment construction. Keep your practice work and notes organised through the year rather than assembling everything in the final weeks.

Link theory to real situations

Questions often describe a household scenario and ask you to apply a principle to it. Practise turning each topic you revise into a worked example, because recognising the principle inside a story is the harder half of the task.

Practice in your other subjects

Home Management is not among the 15 subjects in our WAEC CBT practice test, but it is free to use for timed practice in the rest of your papers.

Official syllabus and materials

WAEC owns the copyright to its question papers. The current syllabus is published by the West African Examinations Council at waecnigeria.org, and approved texts come through accredited bookshops.

List the terms you keep avoiding

Go through one past paper and underline every technical term in the questions. Any you could not confidently define is a gap worth closing before the exam.
