Yoruba is often taken by candidates who speak the language daily, and that familiarity can be misleading. The paper tests formal written Yoruba, correct orthography and set literary texts, none of which conversation alone prepares you for.

Tone marks are not optional
The most common avoidable loss in this paper is missing or misplaced diacritics. Written Yoruba depends on them for meaning, and an answer that reads correctly aloud can still be marked wrong on the page.
Practise writing full sentences by hand with every tone mark and subdot in place, rather than relying on how the word sounds to you.
What the paper covers
Expect comprehension and summary, grammar and structure, essay writing, oral Yoruba, and questions on prescribed literature covering prose, drama and poetry alongside oral tradition such as proverbs and praise poetry.
Check the set texts
As with Literature in English, the prescribed texts change on a cycle. A past question about a book no longer on the list is still useful for practising structure, but it will not help you with content.
- Confirm the current text list with your teacher before revising any literature question.
- Learn a handful of proverbs with their meanings, not just their wording.
- Write practice essays in formal register rather than everyday speech.
Oral Yoruba needs separate work
The oral component tests sound patterns, tonal contrasts and pronunciation in ways that reading silently will not prepare you for. Say your practice sentences aloud, and ask a teacher to correct the tones you consistently flatten.
