The William Louis Poteat Scholarship program was established in 1982 in recognition of one of the university’s most notable historical personalities.
Devout Baptist William Louis Poteat served as the college’s president from 1905 until 1927, taught biology, and was a well-known supporter of academic freedom. These scholarships strengthen the traditional ties between Wake Forest, its Baptist roots, and the state of North Carolina.

Scholarship Benefits
Up to twenty first-year students who are deserving and in need and active members of a North Carolina Baptist church will receive the William Louis Poteat Scholarship.
The recipient must demonstrate a promise of contributing substantially to the church and society. The award is based on good academic success, leadership potential, and church activity.
Application Process
By January 1, applicants for the Poteat Scholarship must send the William Louis Poteat Scholarship Officer a completed letter of recommendation form from a church member.
