NCE Applicants No Longer Sit UTME
From the 2026/2027 admission cycle, candidates applying for NCE programmes, including at COEAKWANGA, with a minimum of four credit passes at SSCE/O’Level are exempted from UTME. This applies to state colleges of education just as it does to federal ones, since JAMB’s policy covers the NCE programme nationwide. It was confirmed at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting in Abuja and reported by the Guardian, Vanguard, and Businessday.
You still need to register with JAMB, though. Eligible candidates go through an Institutional Professional Registration Centre (IPRC) domiciled in a college of education, or any JAMB Professional Registration Centre (PRC), for screening, verification, and issuance of an admission letter via CAPS.
The Old UTME Benchmark (For Context)
Before this change, COEAKWANGA had set a flat UTME requirement of 100 across every combination it offers, from the language-pair combinations like English/Hausa and Arabic/Yoruba, through the sciences like Biology/Chemistry and Mathematics/Physics, to Early Childhood Care Education and Primary Education Studies. We’re keeping that figure here as background only, since it no longer governs NCE admission.
Nasarawa State College of Education, Akwanga, is located in Nasarawa State and receives applicants from all parts of the country. For the SSCE side, you’ll still need the relevant credits, including English and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings.
