The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has published the entry requirements for its Department of Chemistry, covering the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME combination, two Direct Entry routes and the JAMB score needed for screening.

The O’Level requirement here names all five subjects outright, with no optional slot at all. English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology must each be held at credit level.
The UTME is less demanding. Chemistry is compulsory, but only two of Physics, Biology and Mathematics are written, so one of the three sciences you already hold can be left out of JAMB.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Chemistry include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Every one of the five is named, so a strong result in an unlisted subject cannot make up for a weak grade here. This is a stricter list than the UTME combination that follows.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Chemistry and two subjects from below:
- Physics
- Biology
- Mathematics
You choose two of these three alongside Chemistry and Use of English. Since all three are already required O’Level credits, the choice comes down to which two you expect to score highest in.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Chemistry if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) in Physics, Mathematics, or Biology.
- ND/NCE with good grades in relevant ‘O’ level subjects.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIBEN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result.
One of the Five Sciences Can Sit Out the JAMB Four at UNIBEN Chemistry
The O’Level list is the binding one for this department. All five subjects are named, and there is no flexible credit to fall back on if one of them falls short.
JAMB then relaxes slightly, asking for Chemistry plus two of Physics, Biology and Mathematics. Direct Entry candidates need two A Level passes including Chemistry, or an ND or NCE with good grades in relevant O’Level subjects.
Whichever route you use, UNIBEN screens at 200 in JAMB, so treat that score as the first hurdle before the subject combination becomes relevant.
