French is a language course, so the subject itself runs through every condition. A credit pass in French is required at O’Level, French is named in the UTME combination, and an A Level pass in French is required for Direct Entry.

Candidates sometimes assume conversational ability will stand in for the certificate. It will not. The department works from examination results, so anyone without French in their SSCE should plan a resit before registering for JAMB.

Entry Requirements

O’Level Subject Combination

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study French include the following:

Five (5) SSCE credit passes, including French and English Language, plus one (1) other Arts subject.

JAMB UTME Subject Combination

Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.

  • English Language
  • French and any other two (2) subjects from Arts and Social Sciences

Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks

UNIMAID requires any three (3) subjects.

This waiver relaxes the general UTME line rather than tightening it. Where the standard condition limits the two extra subjects to the arts and the social sciences, Maiduguri will accept any three subjects alongside the compulsory English Language.

Direct Entry Requirement

These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study French if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;

Two (2) ‘A’ level passes, including French and one (1) other Arts subject.

JAMB Score

All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIMAID for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have a minimum of 160 or above score in your JAMB result.

About the University of Maiduguri

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is a Federal higher education institution in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital city in northeast Nigeria.

The federal government of Nigeria established the university in 1975 with the goal of it becoming one of the country’s primary higher-education institutions.

With a large student and staff population, the University of Maiduguri admits students from all over Nigeria, regardless of race, culture, or religion.

French at UNIMAID Starts With the French Credit

The O’Level condition asks for five SSCE credit passes including French and English Language, plus one other arts subject. That leaves two of the five open, which gives candidates from mixed subject backgrounds some room.

For UTME, work from the waiver. English Language is compulsory and Maiduguri accepts any three further subjects, which is wider than the arts and social science restriction set out in the general line above it.

Direct Entry needs two A Level passes, French and one other arts subject. Whichever route you take, a JAMB score of at least 160 is required for eligibility, and the departmental cut-off for the session should be checked separately.
