This article is designed to help students who wish to study Arabic Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Lagos State University.
Confirm that Arabic Studies is still listed at LASU before you register for JAMB. Arabic runs through every list, but the waivers offer two ways in for candidates who never sat it at O Level.
Lagos State University, also known as LASU, was established in 1983 by the enabling Law of Lagos State of Nigeria for the advancement of learning and establishment of academic excellence.
The university caters to a population of over 35,000 students enrolled full-time. The university also offers courses at Diploma, Undergraduate, and Postgraduate levels. Lagos State University is in Ojo, a town in Lagos State, Nigeria.
LASU is the only state university in the former British colony. Lagos State University offers diploma, degree, and postgraduate programmes, including an MBA program.
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Arabic Studies;
You require;
Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Arabic, and three (3) other relevant subjects.
Two credits are named and the other three are described only as relevant subjects, which for an Arts programme points at Literature in English, History, Government and the religious studies papers.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
- LASU accepts IS in lieu of Arabic or candidates who indicate interest in Foreign Language learning and possess basic knowledge of Arabic.
- LASU accepts recognized Arabic institutions’ qualifications from candidates who might not have offered Arabic at the ‘O’ Level.
These two waivers soften the Arabic credit considerably. Islamic Studies is accepted in its place, as is an interest in foreign language learning backed by basic knowledge of Arabic.
A qualification from a recognised Arabic institution also counts, which opens the course to candidates whose Arabic training took place outside the secondary school system.
JAMB Subject Combination
In UTME, please note that the English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combinations needed to study Arabic Studies under the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at LASU include;
Arabic and two (2) subjects from Arts and Social Sciences.
The JAMB combination names Arabic directly. English Language is compulsory and the other two papers come from the Arts or Social Sciences, with no waiver offered at this stage.

LASU accepts
- Two (2)‘A’ Level passes in Arabic and any other Arts subject plus five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in other related Arts subjects.
- Qualifications obtained from recognized Arabic Institutions are accepted in lieu of Arabic ‘O’ Level subjects for the fulfillment of other entry requirements. NCE merit in Arabic is acceptable.
The Direct Entry waiver adds an NCE at merit in Arabic as a third route, alongside the A Level pairing and the recognised institution qualifications already mentioned.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into LASU for the 2026/2027 session, should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 160 or above in your JAMB result.
Three Ways to Satisfy the Arabic Requirement at LASU
Arabic is named in the O Level credits, on the JAMB form and among the A Level passes, so the subject sits at the centre of every route into this department.
What the waivers change is how you prove it. Islamic Studies, a qualification from a recognised Arabic institution, or an NCE at merit in Arabic are all accepted in place of the O Level credit. Clear 160 in JAMB for the 2026/2027 session.
