Admission requirements for the Department of Business Education at the University of Calabar have been published. They cover the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME papers, two Direct Entry routes and the JAMB score.
This department recognises an unusually wide range of qualifications. TC II merits, O’Level credits and NTC or NBC credit passes are all accepted in place of one another.
That makes it one of the more open routes at UNICAL for candidates from technical and business college backgrounds rather than conventional secondary school.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Business Education include the following: Five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
- Five (5) TC II merit, ‘O’ level or NTC/NBC credit passes, including English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and two (2) other subjects in the Social Sciences or Arts.
- For NBC, the other subjects could be the following: Commerce, Office Practice, Principles of Accounts, Secretarial Duties, Typewriting, and Shorthand.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Economics and any one subject from below:
- Literature in English
- History
- Government
- Geography
- Chemistry
- Physics

For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Calabar, the Candidate must score 150 and above in JAMB.

Which Certificates UNICAL Business Education Will Accept
The core requirement is five passes including English Language, Mathematics and Economics, plus two other subjects from the Social Sciences or Arts.
Those five may be TC II merits, O’Level credits, or NTC and NBC credit passes, which is a genuinely broad allowance.
NBC holders are given their own list for the two remaining subjects. Commerce, Office Practice, Principles of Accounts, Secretarial Duties, Typewriting and Shorthand all count.
The JAMB combination fixes English Language, Mathematics and Economics, with a fourth paper from Literature in English, History, Government, Geography, Chemistry or Physics.
Direct Entry offers two options, two A level passes or an NCE merit in two relevant subjects, or an NCE merit in Business Education as a double major. The UNICAL JAMB threshold is 150 and above.
