The Department of Education & Social Studies at the University of Calabar has published its admission requirements, covering the O’level credits, the UTME subject combination, two direct entry routes and the JAMB score the university applies.
The O’level condition here names only English Language, asking for two Arts or Social Science subjects alongside it. That leaves two of the five credits entirely open.
The UTME list is longer but still generous. Three papers come from a set of six that spans religious studies, economics, government, history and geography or physics.
Direct entry recognises an NCE in Social Studies from a recognised college as an alternative to A level passes. Each condition appears below in full.
The admission requirements include O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.

O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Education & Social Studies include the following:
- Five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language plus two (2) Arts /Social Science subjects.
Three of the five credits are accounted for. The other two are unrestricted, so science or commercial subjects can complete the set without affecting your eligibility.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language and any three (3) from below:
- Christian Religious Studies
- Economics
- Geography/Physics
- Government
- History
- Islamic Studies
Note that the third entry pairs Geography with Physics, so either counts as the same option. Christian Religious Studies and Islamic Studies are listed separately and both are accepted.
Direct Entry Requirement For Education & Social Studies
Below is the Direct Entry Requirement for Education & Social Studies:
- NCE Social Studies from recognized Colleges
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in relevant subjects
The two bullets are alternatives. The NCE has to be in Social Studies specifically and from a recognised college, while the A level route asks only for relevant subjects.
JAMB Score
For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Calabar, the Candidate must score 150 and above in JAMB.
This mark is set by the university for all departments. Clearing it makes your application eligible rather than securing a place in this faculty.
How Open UNICAL Education and Social Studies Really Is
Few departments ask for so little by name. English Language and two Arts or Social Science credits at O’level, with the remaining two subjects left to you.
In the UTME you write English Language and three papers from the six listed, and you need a JAMB score of 150 or above to be considered.
