Admission requirements for the Department of Fisheries at the University of Calabar have been published. They cover the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME papers, two Direct Entry routes and the JAMB score.
Chemistry and Biology or Agricultural Science are the fixed subjects. Both appear at O’Level and again in the JAMB combination, and Biology and Agricultural Science are treated as interchangeable throughout.
That interchangeability is useful. Candidates from an agricultural science background are not disadvantaged here, which is not true of every related department.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Fisheries include the following: Five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
- Biology/Agricultural Science
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
- English Language and any other Science subject
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Chemistry
- Biology/Agricultural Science and any other Science subject

About the University of Calabar
The University of Calabar is a federal university in Cross River State, in the south south region of Nigeria. It was established in 1975.
The university has a very large student and staff population and a diverse student body. All applicants to the university are accepted, regardless of their cultural or religious background. Additionally, there is no restriction on applicants’ ages.
How Wide the UNICAL Fisheries Direct Entry List Runs
Start with O’Level. Five SSCE credit passes are required in Biology or Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language and any other Science subject.
The JAMB combination is close to the same thing. English Language, Chemistry and Biology or Agricultural Science are named, with any other Science subject completing the four.
Direct Entry is where the department opens up. Two A level passes may come from Chemistry, Biology, Botany, Zoology, Agricultural Science, Geography, Mathematics in its pure and applied forms, Physics, Geology or Economics.
Geography, Geology and Economics stand out on that list, since none of them appear in the O’Level or UTME sections. An NCE in Agriculture is also accepted.
The UNICAL JAMB threshold is 150 and above for any department. If your A levels sit outside the sciences, the Direct Entry list is worth reading carefully before you assume this course is closed to you.
