Admission requirements for the Department of Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Calabar have been published. They cover the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME papers, the Direct Entry route and the JAMB score.
This is a fixed subject course from start to finish. All five O’Level credits are named, and the same three sciences carry through the JAMB combination and the Direct Entry list.
Zoology is the only alternative offered anywhere on the page, and it applies solely to the Direct Entry route in place of Biology.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Medical Laboratory Science include the following: Five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
Direct Entry Requirement For Medical Laboratory Science
Below is the Direct Entry Requirement for Medical Laboratory Science:
- ‘A’ level passes to include Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology.
JAMB Score
For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Calabar, the Candidate must score 150 and above in JAMB.

A Fixed Subject List for UNICAL Medical Laboratory Science
The O’Level requirement is five SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with no optional place.
The JAMB papers are English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Mathematics is the only compulsory credit not repeated at UTME.
Every UTME subject is therefore already an O’Level requirement, which means the examination adds nothing new to prepare beyond the credits themselves.
Direct Entry asks for A level passes covering Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology, the one place where a substitution is allowed.
The UNICAL JAMB threshold is 150 and above for any department. With no optional O’Level slot, verifying all five credits is the first and most useful step.
