English Language is taught under the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at Federal University Gashua. Literature in English is required on all three routes and never has an alternative.

The WAEC/NECO subject combination and requirements needed to study English Language is Five (5) SSCE credits in Mathematics, Literature-in-English, English Language, and three other Arts subjects.

These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study English Language if you don’t intend to use UTME.
You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ Level/NCE passes in Literature-in-English and one other Arts subject.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into FUGASHUA for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored a minimum of 180 and above in your JAMB result.
Literature in English Decides the FUGASHUA English Language Application
The O’Level line names Mathematics, Literature in English, English Language and three other Arts subjects against a stated five credits. Confirm the exact count with the department.
Mathematics being compulsory at that stage is the practical hurdle. A candidate with a full set of arts credits but no Mathematics will not satisfy the requirement.
The UTME combination keeps English Language compulsory, fixes Literature in English, and allows two other Arts subjects.
Direct Entry works the same way, asking for two ‘A’ Level or NCE passes in Literature in English and one other Arts subject.
A JAMB score of 180 and above is the screening threshold for the 2026/2027 session at FUGASHUA and applies whichever route a candidate uses.
