This is to inform the general public and all Rivers State University (RSU) aspirants that the Department of Physics Admission requirements has been published.
The sections below cover the five O’Level credit passes, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, the Direct Entry route for A Level and NCE holders, and the JAMB score needed for screening into Physics at RSU.
Physics and Mathematics are required at every stage, as you would expect. English Language is compulsory throughout, and Chemistry appears at O’Level and again as an option in UTME.
The fifth O’Level credit allows a choice between Further Mathematics, Biology and Agricultural Science, which is the only flexibility the school certificate condition offers.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Physics include Five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Mathematics and any other Science subject from Further Mathematics and Biology or Agricultural Science
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Chemistry or Biology
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Physics if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- NCE/Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Physics, Mathematics, or Chemistry.

Background on Rivers State University
The Rivers State University of Technology was founded in 1979 and is the first of its kind in Nigeria. According to the 4icu.org international higher education rankings, the school is ranked sixth in Nigeria.
The university was established as a non-profit organization to push the frontiers of technology in Nigeria, and the university has been committed to this since its inception.
The school was formerly known as Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), or UST for short, until it was renamed in 2017 by the administration of Governor Nyesom Wike.
What an RSU Physics Registration Should Look Like
At O’Level you need English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and one more science subject, chosen from Further Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science. All five must be credit passes.
In UTME, register English Language, Physics, Mathematics and either Chemistry or Biology. That gives two valid combinations, so pick the one you scored better in at school certificate level.
Direct Entry accepts an NCE or two A Level passes in Physics, Mathematics or Chemistry. UTME candidates need a JAMB score of at least 180 to be eligible for screening at Port Harcourt.
