The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has published the entry requirements for its Department of Industrial Relations & Personnel Management, covering the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME combination, Direct Entry and two waiver remarks.
English Language, Mathematics and Economics are named in both the O’Level and the UTME lists. Economics is the only one of the three that can be substituted, and the waiver below explains how.
The O’Level list also points you elsewhere on the page, asking for two further subjects drawn from the Direct Entry column rather than naming them in place.

O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Industrial Relations & Personnel Management include the following:
- Five SSCE credits, including English Language, Mathematics, and Economics, plus any two subjects listed under the Direct Entry column
The Direct Entry column referred to here lists Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Government, Geography and Statistics. Two of those subjects complete the five credits alongside English Language, Mathematics and Economics.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Economics plus one other subject
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNIBEN accepts Business Method in lieu of Economics
This remark adds an option rather than removing one. Candidates whose school offered Business Method instead of Economics can use it to satisfy the requirement in both the O’Level and UTME lists.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two ‘A’ level passes chosen from Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Government, Geography, and Statistics.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNIBEN Accepts:
- ‘O’ level requirements plus two subjects at the GCE (A/L) or HSC, one of which must be Economics, Business Management, or Mathematics. In exceptional cases, the following qualifications may also be considered.
- ‘O’ level requirements plus a complete pass in the intermediate examination of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) or any other professional Human Resources Management body.
- ‘O’ level requirements plus the National Diploma in Business Administration or any relevant subject (passed with a minimum average of upper credit)
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIBEN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result.
Business Method Can Stand In for Economics at UNIBEN Industrial Relations and Personnel Management
That single waiver line is the most useful detail on this page. Economics sits in both the O’Level and UTME requirements, so a candidate without it would otherwise be shut out before applying.
Direct Entry is unusually broad here, taking A Level passes, a CIPM intermediate pass or another professional human resources qualification, and a National Diploma at upper credit average. UTME candidates still need 200 or above in JAMB.
