The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has published the entry requirements for its Department of Medical Laboratory, covering the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME combination, Direct Entry and the JAMB score needed for screening.

Physics, Chemistry and Biology sit at the centre of every route into this department. All three are O’Level credits, all three are written in the UTME, and all three appear in the Direct Entry condition.
Zoology makes a single appearance, as an alternative to Biology for Direct Entry candidates only. Neither the O’Level list nor the UTME combination offers that substitution.

Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Medical Laboratory Technology/Science include the following:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
Five subjects are listed and all five are required, so nothing in this list can be swapped for another credit. Mathematics is the only one that does not reappear in the UTME.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
The UTME list is the O’Level list minus Mathematics. That makes preparation straightforward, though you still need the Mathematics credit to pass the O’Level screening.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Medical Laboratory Technology/Science if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- ‘A’ level passes to include Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Zoology
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIBEN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result.
Zoology Replaces Biology Only at Direct Entry for UNIBEN Medical Laboratory
The three laboratory sciences are required at every stage, but the wording shifts at Direct Entry, where an A Level pass in Zoology is accepted in place of Biology.
UTME candidates have no such latitude. Biology is named in both the O’Level list and the UTME combination, alongside Physics, Chemistry and English Language.
Mathematics completes the five O’Level credits even though it is never written in JAMB, and a score of 200 or above is required before UNIBEN will screen you.
