The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has published the entry requirements for its Department of Medicine & Surgery, covering the O’Level credits, a waiver remark, the JAMB UTME combination and Direct Entry.
The subject list for this department holds no surprises. English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are all required at O’Level, and the same set minus Mathematics is written in the UTME.
The condition that decides most applications is the sitting rule. UNIBEN requires all five O’Level credits from a single sitting, so results assembled across two examinations will not be accepted.

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Medicine & Surgery include the following:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNIBEN requires the ‘O’ Level credit passes in one (1) sitting.
This is the strictest form the sitting rule takes. Many departments allow two sittings, but Medicine and Surgery at UNIBEN accepts only one, and that applies to all five credits together.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Medicine and Surgery if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- ‘A’ Level passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Zoology in addition to the UTME requirements.
Direct Entry here adds to the UTME requirement rather than replacing it. A Level passes in the three sciences are needed on top of the O’Level credits and the UTME combination.
JAMB Score
All candidates interested in getting admitted into UNIBEN for the 2026/2027 session should know that to be eligible for the screening, you must have scored 200 or above in your JAMB result.
A Resit Will Not Do for UNIBEN Medicine and Surgery
Of everything on this page, the one sitting rule is the condition to check first. A candidate with five strong credits spread over two examinations does not meet it, however good the grades are.
The subjects themselves are fixed and familiar. Mathematics joins English Language and the three sciences at O’Level, then steps aside in the UTME, where Physics, Chemistry and Biology are written.
Direct Entry candidates need A Level passes in those sciences on top of the UTME requirements, and every applicant needs 200 or above in JAMB before screening.
