Admission requirements for the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calabar have been published. They cover the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME papers, two Direct Entry routes and the JAMB score.
Mathematics and Physics are the two subjects fixed at every stage of the UTME route. Mathematics carries further still, appearing in both of the Direct Entry options as well.
The fourth JAMB paper is where this course opens up, drawing on Economics and Geography as readily as on the laboratory sciences.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Computer Science include the following: Five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics plus two (2) other science subjects
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics and any one subject from below:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Agricultural Science
- Economics
- Geography

- NCE merit in Mathematics and one (1) other Science or Social Science subject.
JAMB Score
For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Calabar, the Candidate must score 150 and above in JAMB.

The University of Calabar is a federal university in Cross River State, in the south south region of Nigeria. It was established in 1975.
The university has a very large student and staff population and a diverse student body. All applicants to the university are accepted, regardless of their cultural or religious background. Additionally, there is no restriction on applicants’ ages.
Choosing the Fourth Paper for UNICAL Computer Science
The O’Level requirement is five SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two other science subjects.
The JAMB combination fixes English Language, Mathematics and Physics, then takes one more from Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Economics or Geography.
Economics and Geography on that list are the ones worth noticing, since neither is a science subject and neither will count towards your two optional O’Level credits.
A candidate choosing Economics as their fourth JAMB paper therefore still needs two science credits at O’Level. Chemistry and Biology are the usual pairing.
Direct Entry gives two options, two A level passes in science subjects including Mathematics, or an NCE merit in Mathematics with one other Science or Social Science subject.
The UNICAL JAMB threshold is 150 and above for any department, so the subject planning matters more here than the score does.
