Admission requirements for the Department of Education and History at the University of Calabar have been published, covering the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME papers, the Direct Entry route and the JAMB score.
History is the teaching subject for this degree and is required in all three sections. Around it the UTME list is unusually wide, running to eight optional subjects.
Three Nigerian and foreign languages appear on that list, which is rare and useful for candidates whose strongest papers are linguistic.

O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Education & History include the following: Five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
- English Language
- History and three (3) relevant Arts subjects
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- History and any other two (2) subjects from below:
- Christian Religious Studies /Islamic Studies
- Literature in English
- French
- Yoruba
- Geography/Physics
- Economics
- Government
- Hausa
Direct Entry Requirement For Education & History
Below is the Direct Entry Requirement for Education & History:
- Two (2) NCE merit/’A’ level passes in History and one (1) other relevant Arts subject

The JAMB combination fixes English Language and History, then takes two more from Christian Religious Studies or Islamic Studies, Literature in English, French, Yoruba, Geography or Physics, Economics, Government and Hausa.
French, Yoruba and Hausa on that list make this one of the few departments where a language paper can carry a UTME slot outright.
Physics is the other surprise, sitting beside Geography as an alternative in an otherwise humanities list.
Direct Entry asks for two NCE merits or A level passes in History and one other relevant Arts subject. The UNICAL JAMB threshold is 150 and above for any department.
