The Department of Education & Religious Studies at the University of Calabar has published its admission requirements, covering the O’level credits, the UTME subject combination, the direct entry route and the JAMB score the university applies.
Religious Studies is required at every stage of this application. It appears in the O’level credits, in the UTME combination and in the direct entry condition, with no alternative offered.
Around it the department asks for Arts subjects, and it accepts TC II merit passes in place of O’level credits, which gives holders of that certificate a straightforward route in.

O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Education & Religious Studies include the following:
- Five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes or TC II merit in five (5) subjects, including English Language, Religious Studies, and three (3) other Arts subjects.
All five subjects are accounted for in that sentence. English Language and Religious Studies are named, and the remaining three have to be Arts subjects rather than free choices.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language and two (2) Arts subjects, including Religious Studies, and one (1) other subject.
The fourth paper is the only open one. Religious Studies counts as one of the two Arts subjects, so it does not have to be registered alongside two further Arts papers.
Direct Entry Requirement For Education & Religious Studies
Below is the Direct Entry Requirement for Education & Religious Studies:
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes/NCE merit in Religious Studies and one (1) other Arts subject.
An NCE at merit level is accepted here on the same footing as A level passes, and Religious Studies must be one of the two subjects either way.
JAMB Score
For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Calabar, the Candidate must score 150 and above in JAMB.
The mark is a university condition covering all departments. Clearing it makes your application eligible, with selection between qualified candidates following afterwards.
Religious Studies as the Constant in This UNICAL Degree
No route into this department works without Religious Studies. Candidates who left it out at O’level will need to sit it before applying, whatever their other results look like.
Alongside it you need English Language, three further Arts credits, a UTME combination built around two Arts subjects, and a JAMB score of 150 or above.
