The Department of Animal Science & Technology at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has published its entry requirements, covering the O’level credits, the UTME subject combination, the direct entry route and the JAMB score needed for screening.

Animal Science and Technology welcomes agricultural science candidates, with Agricultural Science accepted in place of Biology both at O’level and in the UTME. Chemistry, however, is required without exception.
The O’level list also allows Geography or Economics as the fifth credit, which brings in applicants whose science results stop short of Physics.
Direct entry pairs compulsory Chemistry with one subject from a list of eight. Each section appears below in the department’s own wording.
The admission requirements include O’level Subject combinations, JAMB UTME Subject combinations, and School and Departmental Cut-Off Marks.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Animal Science & Technology include Five SSCE credits in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
- Biology/Agricultural Science and one of Physics, Geography, or Economics.
English Language, Chemistry and Mathematics are fixed. The fourth credit is Biology or Agricultural Science, and the fifth comes from Physics, Geography or Economics.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Chemistry
- Biology/Agriculture
- Mathematics/Physics
Two slots carry alternatives here. Geography and Economics count towards your O’level credits but are not accepted in the UTME, so the two lists need reading separately.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Animal Science and Technology if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- Two ‘A’ level passes or equivalent in Chemistry and any one subject from below:
- Biology
- Botany
- Zoology
- Agricultural Science
- Geography
- Geology
- Mathematics
- Economics
Chemistry is one of the two passes and the second comes from that list of eight. Equivalent qualifications are accepted, which widens the route beyond A levels alone.

Where Agricultural Science Students Stand at FUTO Animal Science
Agricultural Science is accepted in place of Biology at O’level, in the UTME and in the direct entry list, which makes this department unusually open to agriculture stream candidates.
Chemistry is the condition none of them can avoid. Secure that credit first, then English Language and Mathematics, then your fifth subject from Physics, Geography or Economics.
A JAMB score of 160 or above takes you to screening. Confirm the current subject lists with FUTO before registering, since they are revised between admission cycles.
