Admission requirements for the Department of Geography at the University of Calabar have been published, covering the O’Level credits, the JAMB UTME papers, the Direct Entry route and the JAMB score.
Geography itself is required at every stage and no alternative is offered for it. Mathematics, by contrast, is needed only at pass level rather than as a credit.
That combination makes this one of the more approachable social science departments at UNICAL for candidates whose Mathematics grade is weak.

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Geography include the following: Five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Geography, and any three (3) Arts or Social Science subjects with at least a pass in Mathematics

Direct Entry Requirement For Geography
Below is the Direct Entry Requirement for Geography:
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Geography and any one (1) of Economics, Government, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.
JAMB Score
For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Calabar, the Candidate must score 150 and above in JAMB.
A Mathematics Pass Is Enough for UNICAL Geography
The O’Level requirement is five SSCE credit passes in English Language, Geography and three other Arts or Social Science subjects, with at least a pass in Mathematics.
The JAMB combination keeps the same shape, naming English Language, Geography and two other Arts or Social Science subjects.
Direct Entry broadens considerably. Two A level passes are required, one in Geography and one from Economics, Government, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics.
The appearance of Physics, Chemistry and Biology on that list means a science candidate with a Geography A level has a route in that the UTME side does not offer.
The UNICAL JAMB threshold is 150 and above for any department. Secure the Geography credit first, since nothing on this page works without it.
