The University of Calabar has published the admission requirements for its Department of Religious Studies, covering the O’level credits, the UTME subject combination, the direct entry route and the JAMB score the university applies.
Two subjects decide this application. English Language and Religious Studies, in either its Christian or Islamic form, are required at O’level, in the UTME and again for direct entry.
Everything else is left open. Three of the five O’level credits are unrestricted and two of the four UTME papers are yours to choose, which makes the department accessible to most arts candidates.

O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Religious Studies include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include English Language and CRS/IS.
Only two subjects are named, and CRS and Islamic Studies are treated as equivalent. The other three credits can come from any subject on your result sheet.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- CRS/IS and any other two (2) subjects
The same pairing carries into the UTME. With two papers free, choose the subjects you expect to score highest in rather than ones you assume suit the course.
Direct Entry Requirement For Religious Studies
Below is the Direct Entry Requirement for Religious Studies:
- Two (2) ‘A’ level subjects to include Religious Studies (CRS/IS).
One of the two A level subjects has to be Religious Studies in either form. The second is unspecified, which keeps this route open to a wide range of applicants.
JAMB Score
For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Calabar, the Candidate must score 150 and above in JAMB.
The mark is set by the university rather than the department. Clearing it makes your application eligible for consideration, and selection follows from there.

The University of Calabar is a federal university in Cross River State, Nigeria’s south-south region. In 1975, the university was established.
The university has a very large student and staff population and a diverse student body. All applicants to the university are accepted, regardless of their cultural or religious background. Additionally, there is no restriction on applicants’ ages.
Religious Studies at UNICAL in Practical Terms
The whole application turns on one subject. A credit in CRS or Islamic Studies at O’level, and the same subject again in your UTME combination.
Add English Language, three further O’level credits of your choosing, two free UTME papers, and a JAMB score of 150 or above.
