The University of Calabar has published the admission requirements for its Department of Theatre Arts & Film Studies, covering the O’level credits, the UTME subject combination, the direct entry route and the JAMB score the university applies.
The two subject lists here ask for different things, and that is the detail most applicants miss. Fine Arts is named at O’level, while the UTME combination calls for Literature in English.
Neither appears in the other list. A candidate planning this application needs both subjects in place, one on the result sheet and one on the JAMB registration.
Direct entry, by contrast, is remarkably open, accepting two A level passes from the Arts, the Social Sciences or the Sciences. Each condition is set out below.

The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Theatre Arts & Film Studies include the following:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes to include English Language and Fine Arts.
Fine Arts is the condition that catches people out, since many secondary schools do not offer it. The other three credits beyond English Language are unrestricted.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB
- English Language
- Literature in English and two (2) other relevant subjects
Literature in English is compulsory here even though it is not named at O’level. The remaining two papers are described only as relevant, so check unusual choices with the department.
Direct Entry Requirement For Theatre Arts & Film Studies
Below is the Direct Entry Requirement for Theatre Arts & Film Studies:
- Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Arts, Social Sciences, or Science subjects
No specific subject is named on this route. Two passes from any of those three groups satisfy the condition, with the O’level credits above still applying.
JAMB Score
For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Calabar, the Candidate must score 150 and above in JAMB.
This is a university wide condition rather than a departmental one. Meeting it puts your application into consideration rather than securing a place.

Two different subjects carry this application. Fine Arts is required among your five O’level credits, and Literature in English is required among your four UTME papers.
Candidates who hold one but not the other should address the gap early, because a Fine Arts credit cannot be arranged at short notice.
