English Language at the University of Lagos is built around Literature in English rather than around the English Language paper alone. Literature appears on all three entry routes and is never optional.

To study English Language, candidates must meet the following requirements.
O’Level Subject Combination
- Five (5) SSC credit passes to include Literature-in-English, English Language, and three other Arts or Social Science subjects.

JAMB Score
For any candidate to be admitted to any Department in the University of Lagos, the Candidate must score 200 and above in JAMB.
Literature in English Is the Real Gate at UNILAG
The O’Level requirement is five SSC credit passes to include Literature in English, English Language and three other Arts or Social Science subjects. Two papers are named and the balance is restricted by field.
The UTME combination is more specific than most. English Language is compulsory, Literature in English is fixed, one further Arts subject is required, and the last slot may be Arts or Social Science.
That structure means a candidate cannot fill the combination with Social Science papers alone. At least one Arts subject beyond Literature has to be in place.
Direct Entry asks for two ‘A’ level passes including Literature in English and one other Arts subject. English Language itself is not named at that level, only the Literature paper.
Each section repeats that the same requirement covers English Language and Literature and English Language and Communication Studies. The JAMB score condition is 200 and above for any department.
