This is to notify the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) that the Department of Arabic Studies admission requirements has been published.
The sections below cover the five O’Level credit passes, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, the A Level route into Direct Entry, and the JAMB score needed to be eligible for screening into Arabic Studies.
Arabic is required at every stage of this application. It is named among the SSCE credit passes, it appears in the UTME combination and it is one of the two A Level passes Direct Entry candidates must hold.
Spoken or Quranic Arabic does not satisfy the condition on its own. The department works from examination results, so candidates without Arabic on their statement of result should plan a resit before registering.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Arabic Studies include the following:
Five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language, Arabic, and three (3) other relevant subjects.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Arabic and two (2) subjects from Arts and/or Social Sciences.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Arabic Studies if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
Two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Arabic and any other Arts subject.

The Arabic Credit Is Non-Negotiable at UNIMAID
At O’Level the department asks for five credit passes including English Language, Arabic and three other relevant subjects. Those three are not spelled out, so arts and social science credits are the natural fit.
In UTME, register English Language and Arabic, then two subjects from the arts or the social sciences. The combination is deliberately broad once Arabic is in place, which helps candidates from mixed backgrounds.
Direct Entry takes two A Level passes, Arabic and one other arts subject. UTME candidates need a JAMB score of at least 160 to be eligible for screening, with the departmental cut-off published separately each session.
