This is to notify the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) that the Department of Chemical Engineering admission requirements has been published.
The sections below cover the O’Level credit passes, a Maiduguri waiver on the required sciences, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, the A Level route into Direct Entry, and the JAMB score needed for screening.
Chemical Engineering sits on the usual engineering base of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Those three appear in the O’Level credits, in the UTME combination and again in the Direct Entry conditions, with English Language compulsory throughout.
One waiver note complicates that picture slightly by allowing Biology in place of Chemistry. Read it against the UTME list below and confirm your selection with the department before you register.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Chemical Engineering include the following:
Five SSCE credit passes to include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language and any other Science subject.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remark
UNIMAID requires Mathematics, Physics and any of Chemistry or Biology.
This note allows Biology to stand in for Chemistry, which the general subject list does not. Because the UTME combination below names Chemistry outright, candidates intending to rely on Biology should confirm the position with the department first.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates
To apply for Chemical Engineering as a Direct Entry candidate, you require: ‘A’ level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Settling Your Science Subjects for UNIMAID Chemical Engineering
At O’Level you need five credit passes covering Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language, plus one more science subject. Four of the five are fixed, leaving a single slot that still has to be filled by a science.
The UTME combination is fully specified: English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. That is the safest registration to make, since it satisfies both the general list and the department note above it.
Direct Entry asks for A Level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. UTME candidates need a JAMB score of at least 160 to be eligible for screening, with the departmental cut-off for the session published separately.
