This is to notify the general public and all aspiring students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) that the Department of Food Science admission requirements has been published.
The sections below cover the O’Level subject combination, the four subjects sat in JAMB UTME, two Maiduguri waiver notes, the Direct Entry routes for A Level and diploma holders, and the JAMB score needed for screening.
Food Science and Technology is a laboratory and process science, so Chemistry runs through every route. It appears among the five O’Level credit passes, in the UTME combination and in the A Level conditions for Direct Entry.
The waiver notes matter more here than in most posts, because they change what the department will accept at both O’Level and UTME stage. Read each one against the general line immediately above it.
Entry Requirements
O’Level Subject Combination
The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study Food Science & Technology include Five SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language, and any other Science subject.
JAMB UTME Subject Combination
Candidates will write the following Four (4) Subjects in JAMB.
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics or Biology
- Chemistry
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNIMAID requires Chemistry, Biology/Agriculture, and any one of Physics and Mathematics.
This waiver is the version that governs at Maiduguri. The general UTME line pairs Mathematics with Chemistry and either Physics or Biology, while the department fixes Chemistry and Biology or Agriculture, then takes one of Physics and Mathematics.
Direct Entry Requirement
These are the conditions you need to fulfil to gain Direct Entry admission to study Food Science and Technology if you don’t intend to use UTME. You require;
- ‘A’ Level passes in two (2) of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- ND/HND upper credit in relevant programs.
Special Consideration (Waiver) Remarks
UNIMAID accepts ‘O’ Level credit pass in Biology.
The O’Level line above leaves the fifth credit open as any other science subject. This note confirms that Biology satisfies it, which lines the O’Level requirement up with the UTME waiver rather than contradicting it.

Reading the Waivers Before Applying for UNIMAID Food Science
The safest O’Level set is Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language and Biology. That satisfies the five credit passes as written and matches the waiver confirming Biology as an acceptable fifth science subject.
At UTME, register English Language, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture, and one of Physics or Mathematics. That follows the Maiduguri waiver rather than the general combination, and the waiver is what the department applies at screening.
Direct Entry runs through two A Level passes taken from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, or through an ND or HND at upper credit in a relevant programme. UTME candidates need a JAMB score of at least 160 to be eligible for screening.
